The Mission of PaSCo

The Paderborn Institute for Scientific Computation (PaSCo) is an interdisciplinary central scientific institution of the University of Paderborn, Germany. Scientists from the fields of Mathematics, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering and Mechanical Engineering are involved in this center of expertise. Altogether this constitutes a powerful bundling of existing (and future) competence at the University of Paderborn in the area of Scientific Computation.

A major objective of PaSCo is to build a bridge from academic scientific computation to relevant industrial applications. This way, the use of modern algorithms, numerical methods and respective software realizations will lead to the solution of complex and challenging application problems. The University of Paderborn with its profile as the University of the Information Society offers a perfect setting for this task.

PaSCo was founded in 2001 as a center of expertise for Scientific Computation and has grown to an international approved research institute which is based on specific competence in Engineering with Mathematics and Computer Science as the fundamental fields.

The field of Scientific Computation lives on the close integration of fundamental research and application. It incorporates mathematic modeling, design of calculating methods and algorithms as well as their implementation for tasks in all areas of science and their applications. It also includes the algorithmic fundamental research and the design and implementation of software for scientific problems.

The research in fundamental topics within PaSCo is based in Mathematics and Computer Science. Methods and algorithms are developed which are initially not problem specific, but they have rather a wide field of application. Typical areas are Discrete Optimization, Parallel and Efficient Algorithms or Numerical Mathematics. All members of PaSCo exhibit extensive and effective results in these areas.

The research in the important application field is currently based in Engineering. The topics are manifold, however the focus lies in modern problems for modeling, simulation and optimization. This provides interesting problems for scientists in fundamental research as well as an area where existing methods can be adjusted and applied.

Furthermore, PaSCo has made it its business to support highly skilled young scientists and contributes to preparing these for their future work via its DFG Research Training Group.
