As a central scientific organization at the University of Paderborn, Germany, the "Paderborn Institute for Scientific Computation" establishes a close relation between Mathematics and Computer Science and the fields of Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and Physics. A fundamental objective of PaSCo is to build a bridge from scientific computation to relevant industrial applications.

On the evening of September 21, Prof. Dr. Jerrold E. Marsden passed away in his home in Pasadena, California. As Carl F. Braun Professor of Engineering and Control & Dynamical Systems at the California Institute of Technology he was a renowned, internationally leading mathematician with a working area that ranged from symplectic geometry and geometric mechanics through theory and numerics of dynamical systems to optimal control theory and numerous applications. Among the many scientists all over the world Jerry Marsden was cooperating with, there were also several members of the PaSCo. From his visits in Paderborn, during which he also gave a lecture series ("Paderborn Lectures on Mechanics") for the PaSCo in the summer term of 2004, and many return visits to Pasadena, arose not only a large number of publications, but also some deep friendships. Those who got to know him personally will always remember him as a brilliant scientist, an emphatic teacher and an extraordinary person. |
